VIOTTE ECO-DISTRICT
129 housing in an eco-district
Besançon, France • 2024
The urban repurposing of this former industrial brownfield, is part of a wider, long-term process of analysis and concerted efforts initiated by the city and the public developer of Territoire 25, begun twenty years ago. The project aim is to accompany the overarching goal of transforming this former rail yard with a proposal for a mixed-use development (apartments, specialized lodging, neighborhood services, businesses and public facilities) and emblematic architecture, thereby giving a breath of new life to the train station's neighborhood.
Through this “emblematic” urban project, the goal is to encourage development of bio-climatic buildings playing a role in the effort to increase energy efficiency (geothermal for the energy supply, with the use of Renewable Energy sources for 40% of heating and hot water requirements, implementation of materials ensuring high-performing thermal inertia of building skins, integration of nature in the city with the green areas in the heart of city-blocks and green gables, quality living areas with the integration of loggias and balconies).
The architectural project draws all its inspiration from these ambitious goals and is organized around program and functional layers.
